Biography of:
Theron jay Egg, Jr
Born in Seattle WA

Jay's Grandfather, Theron John Egg was a plumbing contractor in Soda Springs, Idaho.   After a successful contracting career, the family finally settled in Seattle, Washington.  His Son Theron Jay Egg graduated high school there and attended BYU in Provo, Utah.

Jay's dad graduated from BYU as a school teacher and took his first teaching job Tonga, Nuku’alofa from 1964 through 1967.   He accepted a teaching job in Barstow, California where the family remained until all 9 children had grown and moved on to start families of their own.

Jay, as the oldest of the 9 children grew up in Barstow, California.   Though his dad was not a contractor, the trades did not elude the 6 boys. During the summers, Jay and Brian (the oldest two of the Egg brothers) would contract to do anything from remodeling jobs to installations of swamp coolers and garage door openers.

At 15 years old, Jay took his first regular paying job.  Though too young for the position, an exception was made and he was allowed to work as a dishwasher at the Harvey House Restaurant in Barstow, California.    He logged a lot of hours that summer… working his way up to the position of line cook,  a position which he had been told could not be obtained by someone so young in such a short time.  He was making well over minimum wage.  Jay’s mom told him the position of manager would come next…but before that could happen, Bishop Stone form the church they attend (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) secured a job for him with an electrical contracting company.  O’Shea Electrical was working on the chapel that his family met in each Sunday.  He was hired to help with the electrical in a major refurbishment that lasted nearly a year….and thus started his career in the trades.  By the age of 18 he was a fully qualified commercial journey man electrician working  on major solar test sights in the Mojave Desert of California.

Egg Geothermal - Jay Egg parentsAs funding for renewable technologies dried up and jobs became scarce, Jay entered the US Navy as a Nuclear Field Electrician.   After his service, he received an honorable discharge at Orlando, Fl where he took a position as a maintenance electrician, servicing a chain of 25 Wendy's Hamburger Restaurants in Central Florida.  Shortly thereafter he was offered the position of  state wide service manager for a Taylor Freezer (commercial ice cream making equipment) distributor in Tampa.  While working there, Jay thought he had discovered Geothermal Air Conditioning during a repair to his own home air conditioning system on Labor Day weekend in 1989.  After replacing a bad part, he became concerned about the very hot temperatures outside and determined that he would reduce the load on the air conditioning by taking water form his irrigation well used for lawn watering purposes, and pipe it through a water cooled exchanger.  The cool water temperature from the irrigation well measure 72 degrees even during the brutal 95 degree summer heat.  The improvement in efficiency was astounding, as it dropped his energy consumption to about half of what it was running previously.  At this point Jay believed he had invented ground water cooled air conditioning, and began to prepare to capitalize and share this with the world.

As he explored the opportunities, he found that there were others that shared his vision and his invention.  Oklahoma State University had an organization called the International Ground Source Heat pump Association (IGSHPA) headed by Dr Bose that had put considerable research into the technology.  Jay traveled there to become certified as a designer and installer of geothermal exchange systems.  He started Egg Systems in 1990 to provide energy efficient geothermal air conditioning systems to  the Florida, and especially the Tampa Bay markets.  Jay did very well with the technology, being featured on several network affiliated news stations and featured in many newspapers and magazines.

In about 1995, Jay began to expand the focus of Egg Systems to all facets of Heating Ventilation, and Air Conditioning, hoping to capture a larger portion of the market.  Never losing the desire to see this technology flourish, he became a very successful commercial contractor, expanding operation into the Georgia market with the help of his younger brother Brian Egg, the very same with which he performed those remodeling jobs in the late 70's and early 80's.  In March of 2009, having finished another geothermal residential new construction project among may other things; Jay received a call from his project manager about a customer inquiry into federal tax credits.  Jay stated that no such credits existed and that the customer must be mistaken.  When the query persisted, Jay assigned the project manager to research the topic for recent legislation.  They discovered a large document entitled the "American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009".  In this document were provisions for among many other things, a 30% uncapped tax credit for all costs associated with geothermal air conditioning installations that met certain criteria.

Egg Geothermal FamilySeeing that this was the answer for which he had been waiting 20 years,  Jay called a meeting with his website designer, and sales personnel and made plans to begin to help consumers take advantage of this amazing incentive for geothermal technology.  Almost without trying, Jay was quickly again recognized by local  media as an authority in geothermal, landing not just one but three network appearances for different projects in a short few months...and being featured in several print and internet articles in the local press and throughout the world.  By November, firmly ensconced into geothermal technology, he received a query as to whether he would like to write a book.  After some deliberation, Jay and co-author Brian Howard accepted the opportunity to write the professional book for McGraw-Hill on the subject of Geothermal HVAC, Green Heating and Cooling.  The book will come out to a worldwide audience in September of 2010.

Jay is married to Kristy Richards Egg, his wife of twelve years.  They are devout members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and reside in Hudson, Florida.  They are the parents of a blended family of 6 children; 3 boys and 3 girls.  Kristy is an RN and volunteers her skills at a free medical clinic for the working uninsured  in New Port Richey, FL.   She is a full time mother, and volunteers her time in several assignments with their church.  Jay is a Seminary teacher, teaching a religious doctrine class to the high school aged youth of the church each morning just before school.  They receive no financial compensation for service in the church, as is the case worldwide for the membership of the Church's lay ministry.

They have committed to serve a full time mission for the church, hopeful that they may bring their technical skills to people in other parts of the world.
